From the breeder:

Hello! I am a breeder that mostly specializes in British Shorthairs and Chinese Tanks (BSH x Munchkin – with most of my program stemming from working with other Chinese breeders… I am Chinese). I also have Scots on the side but they are getting phased out of my program slowly (I started with Brits and Scots). My partner and I provide round the clock care and ensure that we take the extra steps necessary for this newly developing breed. All of our cats are genetically tested, HCM screened, and FeLV/FIV tested. We feed a mix of raw, wet, and dry, so our cats are used to variety and textures. We have multiple 24/7 drinking fountains, tons of litter boxes, and the entire house is a built out with them in mind. Our kittens do NOT leave until 16 weeks of age and are spayed/neutered before leaving with all vaccinations and rabies done. If my vet points out any kitten that is ill, we will not let them go home until they are better. Their microchips are all registered to me (and not the new owner) so they cannot get lost/placed into the shelter system at any point by owners. I do not overbreed my cats – with most only having 1 litter a year. I hope you’d have us in our program. Thank you!

Asking some relevant questions about their philosophy will ensure you avoid British Shorthair Cat breeders that do this only for financial gain, not having the interests of the cats or you in mind. Make sure you ask about:

  • Health history of the parents and vaccinations. They should have their first vaccinations by the time they're adopted.
  • Whether they've bred their British Shorthair Cats with other breeds (they should disclose this and it would make it not a purebred lien.
  • Have the socialized the kitten among other kittens?
  • Do they belong to a California British Shorthair Cat breed club? You can ask for references from the club.

Why does it matter if I buy from a registered British Shorthair Cat breeder?

When you buy from a registered British Shorthair Cat breeder (with either their local British Shorthair Cat club, governing body, or TICA/CFA), that ensures that a standard of care and expertise is enforced. We offer additional registration through our Cat Kingpin Certified program as well, although it's not a replacement for other registrations.

I have had two interests since I was very young… the Internet and cats. I grew up with two lovely cats in my family, Midnight and Chloe. But when I started looking for a cat as an adult, I realized how few reliable resources there are for finding ethical breeders. So I combined my Internet skills and cat knowledge to create Cat Kingpin, the #1 resource for cat breeders online. Have a question or suggestion for my list? You can reach me here.
